School Nursing Service

The school nursing service supports children and young people from 4 to 18 years attending mainstream and special schools in Camden. To ensure that each child achieves his or her full educational potential we provide a valuable link between health and education services.

The school nursing team visits schools in Camden regularly to offer health assessments, health advice, immunisations and other health promoting services. For further details please download the Camden School Nursing Service Information Leaflet for Parents, Carers & Young People.

Back to School!

Reception Age Health Reviews (Health and Development Check)
This term we will be focussing on Health Reviews for children who are in Reception classes. During this school year, all children in reception will be offered a vision test (eyes), hearing test (ears), growth measurement (height and weight) and developmental health check.

All parents/carers of reception aged children will have received a Healthy Child Programme Information Letter and Parent Questionnaire last term asking for information about your child's health. Many parents/carers have returned the questionnaire providing us with some really valuable information and letting us know of any health concerns. If you have not received the Parent Questionnaire please contact the school nurse for a copy. Please complete and sign the questionnaire and return it to the School Office as soon as possible.

Smoke Free Homes
The school health parent questionnaire includes a question on smoking habits of parents/carers at home. If anyone in your household has a New Year resolution to quit smoking, the School Nurse can provide advice and a referral to ‘Smokefree Camden’ who offers a flexible service to fit your needs. More information can be found on their website: www.smokefreecamden.nhs.uk

School Leavers Booster Immunisations
The school nurses will be holding catch up clinics in secondary schools throughout the year for any children (young people) who missed the recent Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio/MMR school immunisation sessions. If you have not received the parental consent form please contact the school/school nurse for a copy. Please complete, sign and date the form and return it to the School Office. The School Nurse will provide dates for these catch-up sessions as soon as they are confirmed with individual schools.

For more information about these immunisations you can contact the school nurse and view the Department of Health Immunisations at Secondary School Leaflet.

Healthy Schools
School nurses work with school teachers, children, young people and their parents/carers to improve the health and well being outcomes of school communities.

The Camden & Islington Healthy Schools Programme enables schools to be recognised at two levels.

  • Level 1: A Maintaining Healthy School: having the foundation to support pupils’ health and well being
  • Level 2: An Enhancing Healthy School: working beyond the foundation to ensure pupils’ health and well being is part of school improvement

Progress to Date
28 Camden schools have been recognised as “Maintaining Healthy Schools”
(25 primary, 1 secondary, 2 special schools)

10 Camden schools have been recognised as “Enhancing Healthy Schools”
(9 primary and 1 secondary)

Do you know if your school is a Maintaining or Enhancing Healthy School?
