Contraception & Related Services

Appointment based contraceptive (family planning) clinics are available daily at Margaret Pyke Centre in central London. We also offer clinics from health centres across Camden, Brent and Islington, usually on a walk-in basis. Evening and Saturday morning sessions are also available at some clinics.

Clinics are free and confidential. They are open-access which means that you do not need a referral from your GP.  A full list of available clinics can be viewed below.

Services include:

  • Advice and provision of all reversible methods of contraception including intrauterine contraception and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC)
  • contraception including natural family planning
  • counselling and referral for male and female sterilisation
  • emergency contraception
  • pregnancy testing
  • referral for abortion
  • cervical screening (smear test)
  • chlamydia screening by self-taken sample for people under 25
  • young people’s sexual health clinics
  • advice about gynaecological issues including the menopause. pre-menstrual syndrome and menstrual problems
  • advice and referral for breast problems.

What happens in the clinic?

  • When you arrive, you will be asked to complete a registration form. This will include personal details such as your name and date of birth.
  • You will then see a health professional who will discuss options with you and offer you an examination or tests.
  • For some services, such as provision of condoms and chlamydia screening, you do not need to see a health professional.
  • Clinics have a choice of female doctors and nurses.
  • Interpreting, chaperone and advocacy services are available.

PLEASE NOTE:

Walk-in clinics are only able to see a limited number of patients. This varies according to the number of staff available. Clinics are run on a first come, first served basis - when demand for services is high, appointment slots are filled quickly. Please ensure you attend your appointment slot on time.

If a clinic is full and a patient attends with urgent needs, we will do our best to see that patient. We are working towards introducing more booked appointments by early 2012.
