Emergency Contraception

Emergency Contraception is available free from all the clinics listed on our Contraception & Related Services page, usually on a walk-in basis at the clinic sessions shown.

There are 2 types of emergency contraception.

Emergency hormonal contraceptive tablets (Levonelle)

  • available free from our contraceptive clinics, GPs and some pharmacies for under 21s
  • available for purchase from high street pharmacies
  • It is best taken within 24 hours after sex, and is licensed for use up to 72 hours, but can sometimes be used later on medical

Emergency intrauterine device:

  • This is available from our contraceptive clinics, it may be slightly more effective than the tablet especially where sex has taken place around the time of ovulation. It can sometimes be fitted more than 5 days after sex on medical advice.
